Biography
Writing that is clear,
engaging, and accurate has been my objective since I learned how to read. Getting the
words right and on paper was my greatest satisfaction, in the classroom and
outside of it.
My zeal for writing was matched by an aptitude for drawing and design, and I majored in
art education at Pratt Institute.
But teaching did not suit me. I gravitated to
behind-the-scenes work in television production and reveled in the creative
environment of television drama and groundbreaking late-night talk shows. Later I
planned exhibitions at a pioneering New York art gallery and negotiated
touring shows for gallery artists.
My freelance career got its start when Takeda USA, Inc., an employer of nearly 10 years, relocated out of the city. A born-again
New Yorker who walked to work every day, I was not disposed to commute to
the suburbs, and the company did not want to lose my proven marketing and
corporate communications abilities. Takeda became
my first freelance client and remained on my roster for another 12 years,
until the parent company in Japan discontinued its vitamin business
worldwide.
At the same time—quite by chance—one rainy Saturday
afternoon I happened upon the telecast of John Henry winning the 1984
Arlington Million. The legendary racehorse was 9 then, and I didn't know
horses still raced at that age! I'd never seen a horse race. A few weeks
later I went to Belmont Park to cheer John Henry to victory in the Turf
Classic; I became a racing fan, and I began reading everything I could find
about the sport. When I learned that a principal of Takeda's advertising
agency had founded a thoroughbred rescue operation, offering to redesign and
write the
organization's newsletter and fund raising materials was an obvious move.
With two
clients whose interests corresponded closely with my expertise, penchants,
and skills, my new business was out of the gate and has continued to grow.
Besides Pratt Institute, my educational background
includes New York University, the Japan Society, the Art Students League,
and continuing education in writing and editing with professional organizations.
